Since saltwater pools usually lack chloramines you typically don't have the irritants which give traditional chlorine pools the stigma of burning your eyes and smell.
The salt level in the pool can be lowered by excessive splash out of the pool water, heavy rains, and evaporation requiring filling of the pool. That is why it is important to check your Intellichlor unit regularly as it will automatically alert you to low salt levels. Depending on the size of your pool, generally you should only need to keep a few bags of salt on hand to bring the salt level back up.
