Winter Safety Covers
Typically there are four types of safety covers that pool owners can choose
from:
- Standard Mesh
- Solid Safety
- Solid with Mesh Insert
- Upgraded Mesh
With each different cover you can also choose from a variety of colors.
Safety covers provide just that: SAFETY! Unlike just putting a tarp with
some blocks or water bags attempting to keep the cover on over a winter season, safety
covers are custom made and go through a certification process so they can be called a true
"safety cover".
Stainless steel springs are fastened over brass anchors which are set flush
in the decking. Heavy duty straps crisscross the pool surface.
- Standard Mesh: Standard mesh safety covers offer a great amount of
safety plus the convenience of not having to pump water off of a standard solid safety
cover. A standard mesh safety cover does however allow some sunlight to enter the pool.
Sunlight can allow some algae to grow. So you are sacrificing cleanliness of the pool for
convenience of no pump.
- Solid Safety: Solid covers offer security plus complete protection
from water, dirt, dust, and sunlight. Most safety covers do come with an automatic pump to
remove standing water. This pump must be checked to ensure it is working properly during the
winter months to prevent the water from accumulating and your local water fowl from
stopping over for a swim!
- Solid with Mesh Insert: This cover provides more protection from
sunlight and algae than a standard mesh but will still allow more debris to possibly enter the pool
than a solid safety cover through the mesh insert. It does prevent water build up and the
use of a pump by allowing water to go through the mesh insert.
- Upgraded Mesh: Most manufacturers now provide an upgraded mesh
which will let water through but also provide 98% to 100% shade to significantly reduce algae
growth.
Merlin Industries has even patented their Smartmesh. It provides
100% shade from algae causing rays of the sun while still allowing water to pass through. Their
material also filters debris as small as 40 microns. That is almost as good as pool
filtration systems.
